Rochelle Foster wept silently, her slim, naked body shivering with cold and shame. She huddled in a corner, legs and arms drawn up to cover herself, a bare gray mattress under her.

In the doorway, Chink stared at her, his head tilted to one side, his huge, muscular arms folded across his massive chest “Yeah, she’s special,” he said. “You did right, Jocko. Anything else you’d of done would have been wrong, dig?”

Jocko, smiling with the false warmth of someone seeking protection from a person he fears, said, “Hey, Chink, you know I’m straight with Pearl. I ain’t about to do what Roger did.”

“That’s why Roger got what he got. Where’s your woman?”

“D? Out tryin’ to score, man, coppin’ some shit from Nino. If she can find him. She turned some tricks yesterday, and that two hundred dollars you just gave us for this here fine fox, damn, that’s gonna keep us straight for maybe a couple days.”

Chink didn’t look at the small black pimp the entire time he talked to him. He didn’t like junkies anyway. Treacherous bastards. They would kill a baby for a fix. Jocko and his white whore would do anything for money, money they always spent on dope. That’s why she sold her ass. That’s why Jocko pimped and sold broads to Pearl. For money and dope.

“What’s that shit all over her? You touch this gal, Jocko?”

“Hey, hey, Chink, man, you think I’m dumb? Ain’t laid a hand on her. That there’s vomit man. D put somethin’ in her drink last night had to do somethin’ to get her back here. All night long she’s sick, groanin’, throwin’ up. No, man, I ain’t touched the bitch.”

Chink stepped forward into the bare room. “He touch you? Come on, look at me when I talk to you. He touch you?”

Jocko’s nervous grin froze on his dark face, and his eyes silently pleaded with the girl. He hadn’t touched her, but one word from this little fox, and Chink would go to work on little Jocko, and there wouldn’t be enough of his tiny black ass to hide under a quarter.

She shook her head no.

Jocko’s sigh of relief was loud and long.

“Pearl don’t want her touched, he—”

Jocko interrupted with a nervous desperation. He wanted to justify the girl’s being naked. “Took her clothes, Chink, s’all. Man, how I know what she do if she got well at night and decide to run off? I’d be out two hundred dollars.”

“You’d be out a lot more than that, Jim, best believe it.”

Jocko gulped and grinned. He believed it. What had happened to Roger was all over town, and it was too fresh to be forgotten or ignored.

“Gimme a blanket or something. Takin’ her uptown and—”

“Pearl’s?”

“None of your goddamn business. Just gimme something to wrap her in, just to get her to the car. And you … yeah, you, little girl, you do what I tell you, hear? Get funky with me, bitch, and I slap your head loose, you dig? Look at me when I’m talkin’ to you.
